Columbia Law School Seeks Clinical Professor for Human Rights Clinic

COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL invites applications for a clinical professorship
beginning July 1, 2002 for the law school's Human Rights Clinic. During its
first three years, the Human Rights Clinic has pursued a model of human
rights education that combines in-class instruction in human rights law and
lawyering skills with actual practice on advocacy projects.  Those projects
have included challenging human rights violations in national, regional, and
international fora. Taking advantage of Columbia's New York location, clinic
students have been involved in advocacy before U.N. treaty bodies.

The Clinic's future work will be open to the direction of the new professor.
The Clinic works closely with other human rights entities at Columbia,
including the law school's Human Rights Institute and the university's
Center for the Study of Human Rights.

Candidates must have significant experience in human rights law and policy.
Experience in teaching, particularly clinical teaching, is highly desirable.
The current director of the clinic is also the Director of the Human Rights
Institute. Whether the position will include the directorship of the
Institute has not yet been determined and may depend on the qualifications
and interests of the candidates.

The candidate may be considered for Assistant, Associate or Full Clinical
Professor. Clinical faculty at Columbia Law School receive long-term
renewable contracts with sabbatical and other benefits largely comparable to
those of tenured faculty. The clinical faculty play a significant role in
law school governance and are encouraged to participate fully in law
school and university activities.

Resumes and letters of application should be forwarded to:

Professor Jane M. Spinak

Although there is not an official closing date for receipt of resumes

later than mid-March.  The search committee will contact candidates for
